“I remember you well in the Chelsea Hotel”

Cantava così Leonard Cohen, ricordando i pomeriggi passati con Janis Joplin nel Chelsea Hotel a New York. Vera e propria icona e riferimento degli anni ’60 e ’70, era frequentato e adorato da tutti gli artisti dell’epoca tra cui Bob Dylan, Andy Warhol che qua girò il film “Chelsea girl” che aveva come protagonista Edie Sedwick. Qui Sid Vicious uccise (forse) la sua fidanzata in preda all’eroina. Una piramide di creatività, di scambio, difficile da comprendere adesso e del quale si può solo intuirne il sapore. Sembra quasi, osservandone la facciata, che nasconda come può la storia dei grandi nomi che l’hanno adottata come “casa”. Affacciandosi sulla 23a strada, mostra il suo lato migliore e si rende presentabile alla every-day life della City. In realtà è rimasto tutto là dentro, conservato nella memoria di quelle mura. Una volta entrati, era impossibile andarsene.

But you can never leave! ”

Used to sing Leonard Cohen, remembering the afternoons spent with Janis Joplin at Chelsea Hotel in NY. True icon and reference of ’60 and ’70, it was attended and adored by those days artists as Bob Dylan, Andy Warhol who shot here “Chelsea Girl” played by Edie Sedwick. Sid Vicious killed (maybe) here his girl, under the effect of heroine.  A pyramid of creativity,  hard to understand now and about which we can only guess the taste. It seems like, looking at the front face, it hides the story of all those big names that adopted it as “home”. Overlooking on the 23th street, the hotel shows his best side, and it’s presentable to the everyday life of the City. Actually everything remains inside, hold in the memory of the walls. Once you come inside, never go back.

What it takes to be a fashion icon?

Un mix di ingredienti difficilmente identificabili, che però creano interesse, emulazione, ammirazione. Sono le fashion icon, vere e proprie muse che con il loro stile seducono il pubblico e impercettibilmente condizionano i trend, e i gusti. Edie Sedwick era una di queste o comunque lo è stata per un periodo. Negli anni ’60 entrò in contatto con Andy Warhol, entrando a far parte della sua Factory e irrimediabilmente risultandone sopraffatta. Il suo stile ispira gli stilisti, finisce sulle copertine di Vogue, partecipa a film. E’ l’immagine della pop-art Edie. Perennemente in bilico tra l’eleganza, il glamour, la novità, il talento e la stupidità, la leggerezza. Stella e ragazzina viziata di New York. Il mix è fatale, diventa “La Superstar”. Ma l’eco è troppo forte, mentre lei non lo è abbastanza. Si lascia sopraffare, cadendo nelle droghe e si perde per sempre. Le sue foto sono magnifiche: orecchini enormi ma assolutamente necessari, caschetto biondo, volto angelico. Una fashion icon, una Poor Little Rich Girl.

A very difficult mix of ingredients, which create interest, emulation, admiration. They are fashion icons, out and out muses that, with their style, seduce the public and, subtly, influence trends and tastes. Edie Sedwick is one of them or was for a while. In the ’60 got in touch with Andy Warhol, belonging a member of his Factory and irreparably becoming overwhelmed. Her style inspires designers, conquer Vogue’s covers, act in movies. She is the image of pop-art.  Always in unstable balance between elegance, glamour, news, talent and stupidity, lightness. Star and New York spoiled girl. The mix is lethal, she become “The Superstar”. But the echo is too loud, and she’s not strong enough. She’s overwhelmed, falls in drougs and she’s lost forever. Her pictures are amazing: huge earrings but with no doubt necessary, blonde bob hair, angelic face. A fashion icon, a Poor Little Rich Girl.
